Our Story
Welcome to the Hamilton Economic Summit
The Hamilton Economic Summit (HES) is a premier leadership initiative facilitated by the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce.
The annual summit event, and follow on activities throughout the year, are designed to align people and organizations in support of a shared, long-term goal: To make Hamilton Canada’s top midsize city measured by the attraction of talent and investment.
HES is anchored on the principles of collaborative leadership and community engagement. It is guided by a subcommittee of the Hamilton Chamber and supported by more than 20 public and private sector sponsors, including the City of Hamilton.
The inaugural HES was held in 2008 to address the need for a neutral forum to encourage information sharing among community leaders from all sectors of our local economy. It was inspired by the Ontario Economic Summit and soon became regarded as a catalyst for the economic renewal in Hamilton. Click here to read the HES 2008 Proceedings Document.
The second HES was held in May 2009 and provided an opportunity for Hamilton’s leadership to weigh in on two documents germane to the future our community: A draft of the City’s revised Economic Development Strategy and a draft development framework created by the Jobs Prosperity Collaborative.
Delegate feedback from the 2009 summit was organized in a proceedings document now used to help inform programs, policies and services driving local economic development and redevelopment. This summit also featured the premiere of Siemens City of Change, a complementary event to increase the engagement of Hamilton students and youth in economic development leadership and practice. HES 2010 celebrated the theme Prosperity Now: Acting on Hamilton’s Top Business Opportunities. It focused on the wealth generating and community-building outcomes arising from three large projects that together have the potential to transform our local economy: The 2015 Pan Am Games, downtown regeneration and new transportation infrastructure. HES 2011 is scheduled for May 12, 2011 and will advance the theme People & Profits: Energizing Our Lower City.
